Granny flats and secondary dwellings with room to grow

Ageing parents who need to be close. Adult kids saving for their first home. A home office or studio. Extra rental income. A granny flat can be the answer to all of these, and in South Australia, the rules have made them even more useful.

01

Granny flats can now be rented to anyone

Since November 2023, SA regulations allow granny flats (known in planning terms as ancillary accommodation) to be leased or rented to anyone, not just family members of the people living in the main home. According to PlanSA, this applies even if the original approval restricted who could live there.
