Building Consent: proving your home is built to be safe

Once your project has Planning Consent, it needs to show that it can be built safely and to the right standards. That’s what Building Consent is for.

01

What is Building Consent?

According to PlanSA, Building Consent is required for development that involves building work, such as new homes, extensions, carports, swimming pools and demolition. It checks that the work meets safety and compliance standards. It’s usually granted by a council building officer or an accredited professional.

02

What gets assessed

Building Consent checks your plans against the Building Rules, which include the National Construction Code. Assessors look at things like:

  • Structural adequacy, including footings and framing
  • Fire safety
  • Health and amenity, such as wet areas, ventilation and light
  • Energy efficiency
  • Access and safety features
03

What’s needed for your application

  • Detailed construction drawings
  • Structural engineering drawings and calculations
  • Soil report and footing design
