Planning drawings that give your project the best chance of approval

Before you can build in South Australia, most projects need Planning Consent. That means someone at council, or an accredited professional, needs to assess whether your home fits the local planning rules. Your planning drawings are what they assess.

Clear, accurate and complete drawings help your application move through smoothly. Incomplete or unclear drawings are one of the most common reasons applications get held up with requests for more information.

01

What are planning drawings?

Planning drawings show what you want to build and how it relates to your site and your neighbours. They’re prepared against the Planning and Design Code, the rulebook used across South Australia to assess development.

02

What’s usually included

The exact requirements depend on your project and your zone. We’ll check what your application needs before we start drawing.

  • Site plan showing boundaries, setbacks, driveways and the position of your home
  • Floor plans showing the layout and dimensions of each level
  • Elevations showing the height and appearance of each side of the home
  • Sections through the building where needed
  • Details such as site coverage, private open space, landscaping and car parking where the planning rules require them

How we help

01

We check the rules first

We look at the zone and overlays that apply to your property, so the design responds to them from the start rather than being fixed afterwards.

02

We draw it right

Our planning drawings are clear, accurate and prepared to the standard assessors expect.

03

We lodge and manage it

We can lodge your application through the PlanSA portal and handle any questions from the assessing authority. See our Planning Consent page for more.

04

Frequently asked questions

Do all projects need planning drawings?

Not every project needs Planning Consent. Some minor works are exempt or only need Building Consent. We’ll tell you what applies to your project.

How long does Planning Consent take?

Timeframes depend on how your application is assessed and whether more information is requested. We’ll give you a realistic estimate for your project.
